Daejanggeum is enjoying popularity in Japan with its broadcast on NHK under the title of 'Jang-Geum's Oath'. Ms. Lee Young-Ae, the lead actress of the drama, was invited to a TV program in Japan. On the evening of May 7 at Haneda Airport, fans of Lee Young-Ae were waiting for her arrival.

Lee Young-Ae finally showed up, and first thing she did was greeting her fans. She expressed her gratitude by signing autographs and shaking hands. She smiled back at her fans one by one, who took their time to come to the airport and welcome her. It was nice to see her hold their hands until the last minute she entered the car. It looks like her Japanese fans are also touched by her kindness.
Lee Young-Ae is witnessing her popularity as a Korean Wave star through Daejanggeum, which is being aired on NHK at the moment.

Q: How do you feel coming to Japan?
YA: I'm grateful, and I also feel that I should have worked harder..
Q: Today is Parent's Day in Korea.
YA: I called them this morning, but they didn't answer. I guess they're mad. (laughs) I think that the biggest present for them is for me to do a good job of promoting Daejanggeum here.
YA: I sincerely hope that Daejanggeum will be a TV drama that can give you strength in your lives.
[Voiceover]
As you can see from the continuous camera flashes, she attracted a lot of attention from the local press, as an Asia-wide star.
Another proof of her popularity could be seen from the huge crowd who came to see the live TV show where she appeared as a guest. Inside NHK Hall where the show was to take place, many Daejanggeum related products were also hot on sale.

They're very good. As you can see, the hall was filled with audiences. Lee Young-Ae showed up in beautiful hanbok to the enthusiastic applause of a few thousand audiences. She said she wanted to show them the beauty of Korea. Indeed she looks beautiful. As she walks by and shakes hands with each audience, the audiences are full of excitement.

This program had always been filmed in its own studio. However, when more than 16,000 applications poured in to see Lee Young-Ae, they had to move to NHK Hall for the first time in 12 years which can accomodate a larger crowd.
Following the live TV show, a fan meeting was held for a closer communication with fans. An applause of admiration continued as she appeared in a graceful red dress.

YA: Her gorum (hanbok tie) is not tied correctly.

Now that's something one can't overlook as a Korean. She stood up and corrected the assistant's gorum herself. It seems even the gorum is happy to be corrected by her kind hands.
Next is a review of Daejanggeum's crucial scenes.

Lee Young-Ae again cleverly points out a mistake.
YA: It says, 'one word to Geum-Young who has become the head of royal kitchen'. It should be Hanmadi (one word), not Anmadi, which really isn't a Korean word at all. (laughs)
[Voiceover]
The emcee looks startled. The Japanese audience seemed to enjoy Lee Young-Ae's correction given in a cheerful manner.

Lastly, she gave a special gift to a fan on stage with a warm hug. And thus her visit to Japan successfully came to an end.
Q: When will you show yourself to the fans in Korea?
YA: I guess a chance will come sometime in the future. I'd like to do so as soon as I can. Let me say thanks to these people for a moment. (bows to TV staffs)
